Kingmaker mode is an extension of the Skirmish mode Firefly Studios introduced in Stronghold: Crusader. In the Skirmish mode of Crusader, players would build up their castle and then attack their neighbors in an attempt to crush and destroy the opposition. In Stronghold 2, Kingmaker continues this delightful concept, but takes it to the next level.

In Kingmaker, the map is divided up into estates. There are two kinds of these territories: village estates, and castle estates. Village estates can be purchased by spending honor points, which you earn by “living like a lord.” So when you do things like hold feasts and jousts, have a wife or attend church, you earn this new resource called honor.

When you add a new estate to your empire, any resources created by that territory get sent back to your main castle via a carter (sent from a Carter’s Post, one of the new buildings in Stronghold 2). Smaller village estates are quite useful for setting up external farms, leaving the space within your castle walls free to be used for your war making apparatus. Castle estates are huge structures that are equal to your own, initial castle, and must be taken by force.

So in Kingmaker, you will fight for complete domination of a map, acquiring and losing territories as you fight it out with either computer-controlled or human opponents (up to eight people can play in Stronghold 2 multiplayer matches).

The other new component of Kingmaker is the ability to spend your honor points on promotions. Promotions are Stronghold’s take on the “ages” concept from other strategy games. You begin the game as a lowly Freeman, but can advance through the ranks up to a Squire, Knight, Knight Errand, Duke, and eventually become a full-fledged King. Advancing in ranks gives you access to new buildings and units, but where Stronghold 2 differs from other strategy games is that your existing units stay the same.

So in other words, an Archer created by a Squire is the same as an Archer created by a King. So if you want to stop spending your honor points on promotions early on and instead concentrate on acquiring more territories and building up a huge army, you can opt for that instead. It’s entirely up to the player.

Territories and promotions will be available in both the regular campaign and Kingmaker mode. The primary difference there is that in the regular campaign, you can’t advance any higher than Duke, as there already is a king (and he’s perfectly happy in that role thank you very much).

Heritage of Kings: The Settlers marks the return of the 11-year-old Settlers franchise. This fifth game in the series comes after a four-year hiatus, and on the surface, much has changed. The cutesy 2D graphics of the original games have given way to a beautiful and more mature 3D look. However, at its core, Heritage of Kings stays true to its predecessors, as this is a real-time strategy game that's focused far more on the process of constructing buildings rather than tearing them down. And that makes for the game's greatest strength, as well as its biggest weakness.

It takes a really big village to succeed at Heritage of Kings.

The campaign in Heritage of Kings tells the story of your character, Dario, as he attempts to unify the land and reclaim his rightly throne. As the lost prince of this story, it's his job to prove to the people that he's a good steward by defeating the forces of the evil and restoring the land. In addition to the various spearmen, swordsmen, archers, and cavalry that he can recruit, Dario is accompanied by various hero units, each with his or her own special powers and abilities. This all falls fairly well into the familiar real-time-strategy formula.

Where Heritage of Kings differs from most RTS games is in its focus. In most RTS games, you usually start a level with a fair bit of building and end it with a lot of combat. But in Heritage of Kings, the ratio is more like 90 percent building and 10 percent combat. This keeps in line with the earlier Settlers games, as the series has always been more about medieval city building than Command & Conquer. As such, your goal is to build a sprawling, interdependent web of buildings, where workers and peasants go about their daily lives. It's a very charming and engaging formula, at first. However, the further you get into the game, the more you realize that you're not so much playing Heritage of Kings than you are simply sitting around waiting to gather the mountain of resources you need to build up the same huge, interconnected web of buildings over and over again.

Dirt Track Racing: Sprint Cars, henceforth known as DTRSC, features 16 drivers and 19 tracks including Eldora Speedway and Knoxville Speedway. For those who are not familiar with this series, it is a Dirt Track racing series that is largely popular in North America. The World of Outlaws series has grown in popularity over the last few years because of the great competition and spectacular crashes.
DTRSC is very similar to its predecessor Dirt Track Racing, but an updated physics engine and an all-new damage model are the largest changes. Several Sprint Car games have been released as of late, but nothing comes close to the precise physics of DTRSC. A thin manual, and no jewel case are a big hit to the presentation area of the game. The manual includes some general tips to using the garage area, as well as how to use some of the features included in the game. The navigational menus look good, and are very easy to navigate. Loading times were good, and it only took a few seconds to go from the navigation screens to entering a track and beginning a race. The physics engine presented in DTRSC completely makes up for the thin manual.

Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars as the title suggests concentrates on the early nineteenth century. The game allows you to control Egypt and one of five European nations including France, Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria. The single-player game includes a Campaign mode, a Skirmish mode and a Battle mode (with 10 battles, such as Austerlitz, on offer). Perhaps the most promising single-player mode is titled Battle for Europe. Battle for Europe looks rather like a board game in that you move your armies (represented by icons) from territory to territory. The game plays out in a turn-based fashion and allows for diplomacy to be carried out and other tactical decisions. You'll be asked by other nations to perform certain tasks and you'll be rewarded for doing so. Naturally the battles are carried out in real-time using the standard game engine. We've seen this kind of thing before in Rise of Nations and the Total War series but it’s still great to see such a mode in Cossacks II. The multiplayer side of the game (LAN and Internet) allows for skirmish battles. Clans and rated games are both possible for Internet play. Unfortunately you can't play the Battle for Europe game in multiplayer mode, which is a shame as it would have been interesting.

Cossacks II looks fairly good for a RTS game. The game features 140 unique units and 180 building types and all of these are nicely detailed. The maps that you'll battle on are huge and the battles are once again humongous (consisting of up to 64,000 units) with many thousands of units involved. The screen resolution can range from 1024x768 to a whopping 2048x1536 so if you are fortunate enough to have a monitor that supports such a sky high resolution the battles will look even more dramatic. You'll notice a range of video clips that are shown during a battle (in a small window at the bottom of the screen). These look OK but don't really serve any purpose and certainly wouldn't have been missed had they been left out. On the whole the game is presented quite nicely and the game engine performs well considering how many units can be onscreen at any one time.

How deaf gamer friendly is the game?

There are no problems for deaf gamers with Cossacks II. The game is subtitled so you'll be able to follow the campaign's story. All messages are show in text too. During a game an envelope icon will appear on the left side of the screen and clicking on this will show you the message. The games tutorials are also subtitled so you'll be able to learn the basics of the game. The game manual isn't anywhere near as impressive as the one for Cossacks: European Wars but it's still a decent effort weighing in at 70+ pages. During the game you'll see floating text messages from the units as they come under attack. These messages all relate to their morale and will show you if the men are scared or fear for their lives. It's a nice touch and one that other RTS games should take on board.

Final thoughts.

Finally then the sequel to the highly acclaimed Cossacks is here. Fans of the original game should be pleased with Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars although I daresay there will be some, like me, who would have expected more new features and for the game to feel more different than it does. That said though we are still talking about a quality RTS and one that is definitely worth picking up. The sheer scale of the battles is impressive and the Battle for Europe mode is sure to swallow up many RTS gamer's spare hours over the coming months. Best of all the game is once again deaf gamer friendly and you'll be able to fully appreciate what's on offer in Cossacks II.

Although these last years the sim-build genre was almost completely forgotten due to a lack of titles which would warrant the attention of fans and press alike, 2006 proved to be a fabulous year for the fans of the genre. CivCity: Rome, Glory of the Roman Empire and Caesar IV proved first and foremost that this type of games has finally completed its transition to full 3D graphics. Secondly, regarding gameplay, they showed that there’s still room for substantial improvements or original ideas, even though, on the other hand, they were simplified in some ways, in an attempt to lure new players to the genre. Anno 1701 is a part of this trend as well, not being quite as shiny as its predecessors but it can be easily catalogued as the best sim-build game of the year.

Like Anno 1602 and 1503, Anno 1701 manages to impress the player right off the bat with its wealth of details and color variety, all assembled this time in a complete 3D graphics. Regardless of the zoom level, Anno 1701 is a joy to watch, from the parallax mapping effects for the clouds, which create depth, all the way through to the detailed way in which the islands are depicted, whether it’s the vegetation, wildlife or buildings. A closer inspection of the islands on a medium sized map will reveal a significant variety of wildlife (bears, dears, tigers, zebras, elephants, gorillas) accompanied by vegetation which rarely gives the feeling that it’s artificially placed. Even more impressive is the building variety, with some notable differences even between those from the same category, especially on the maximum zoom level. Moreover, the buildings can be rotated when placed, so a city with thousands of citizens will hardly have any identical areas.
